The University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh commencement ceremony is held twice yearly, in December and May, concluding each academic term and marking a milestone of achievement. Graduates process into the venue wearing full academic regalia — graduation gown, graduation cap (mortarboard or tam), and appropriate tassels. Faculty and instructional staff don traditional academic regalia (faculty regalia) representing centuries-old academic dress traditions.

Students participating must wear the prescribed cap, gown and tassel sets without unauthorized modification. The undergraduate graduation gown is the black bachelor’s gown, paired with a mortarboard and tassel whose colour corresponds to the field of study: e.g., white for Bachelor of Arts, gold for Bachelor of Science, drab (tan) for Business Administration, apricot for Nursing, citron for Social Work, brown for Fine Arts, pink for Music, crimson for Applied Studies/Professional Studies. Graduate (master’s) candidates wear the master’s gown, mortarboard and black tassel; the hood reflects the field.

Academic honours are distinguished by colored cords: gold cords signify Latin honours (Summa cum laude at 3.9+ GPA, Magna cum laude at 3.75+, Cum laude at 3.5+), and white cords denote College-level honours (for 30–59 credits at UWO). Additionally, eligible graduates may wear approved stoles or medallions reflecting honours college membership, study abroad, athletics participation or international status.

In order to participate, graduates apply for graduation and obtain guest tickets (up to eight guests) for their ceremony. Faculty regalia rental or borrowing is arranged via the bookstore or Event Services. Throughout the ceremony, attendees are asked to refrain from disruptive items (such as balloons or beach balls) and to remain through the full event, honouring the integrity and dignity of the academic regalia tradition.

• Doctoral Level

Doctoral gown with rich velvet panels, tam style cap and tassel, hood showing gold & white chevron for UWO plus discipline colour. Honor cords/stoles vary by program.

• Faculty & Discipline Regalia

Faculty regalia reflect the academic traditions and discipline colours of the university. Colours include drab (Business), light-blue (Education), apricot (Nursing), citron (Social Work), brown (Fine Arts), pink (Music), gold (Sciences), white (Arts).
